April Snow Storm

I thought it was a bad dream. I awoke this early morning and seen snow hanging on tightly to the pine tree right in front of my bedroom window. It was to early to wake up! And I was cold, very cold!

I feel back asleep, to be woken up by the whining of my dog. He needed to go out, and out now! My eyes not yet wanting to open. I thought to myself, was it a dream? Did I really see snow at the first light of the day? And why is it so darn cold in the house?

My eyes still blurry from the good nights sleep, and as they are focusing in, oh yes it snowed. And I mean it really snowed sometime in the dark of night. We from the North Woods are all to aware not to let 70 degree weather only a few days ago fool us. But, this snowfall I think took a lot of us off guard. As we have not seen a snowfall like this all winter long. And winter is really suppose to be over with.

We have about 8 inches of wet heavy snow. That is why we had no power in the early morning. The branches from the trees hanging down to their breaking point. It is still snowing and almost close to three in the afternoon. The weather folks do have us under a snow storm warning till tomorrow morning!

The kids up north here are used of this winter weather and school was not canceled. For the most part school is only canceled when we get cold weather, and not snow. The buses will protest in the cold, the kids dance and laugh.

As for me, the power came back on and we warmed up the house. Keeping the heat on a bit higher then normal. With wet snow still falling and the branches getting more snow on them, the power will be out again. Keeping the heat on and higher will let the house stay warmer a little bit longer.

Hey, did I just hear, “sleding?”

Saturday Post

The spring weather that has graced us here in the North Woods, with sun and warmth. Is now for a few days going to be coming to a crashing end. With cold air, some rain, and snow! Now mind you, we do need the rain as we are in a sever drought and fire levels remain “very high.” What we do not want after a long cold winter is snow!

The Weekend Up North

The last day of January! It is a perfect day to the end of the first month of the new year.

We woke up with a beutiful frost that clung to all the ever green trees. It was truly a winter wonder land this morning and through out the day today.

We finally broke the long cold spell today.  We up north did not get above freezing today, but still headlines are the same all down south. http://www.weather.gov/view/prodsByState.php?state=WI&prodtype=public

Like I have been saying, this winter season for cold temps. is one we will not soon forget. It was a slow start in terms of snowfall, and we are below normal for snowfall. But the cold temps. have kept the snow we do get from melting. We cannot have it all, nor the perfect winter weather every year, as much as we would like too.

This weekend also looks to be good for our local businesses. With a lot of snowmobiles out, and talking to a local bait store owner, the ice fishing is starting to pick up now. With our ice conditions at there best, people are having no problems getting on the lakes. Last night my hubby measured the ice, about 30-32 inches of ice.

We did not yet get our annual “winter thaw” yet this season. At least once during the winter we get warm weather, and a major thaw. I remember one year in February, most of the snow melted and we where flying kites, in tee shirts! Oh what one will do up here for entertainment in the long, cold, and dark winter months. Those are extreme thaws, and not welcomed by people who depend on snow. And on folks like my husband and I who wait all summer for snowmobiling and ice fishing.

I do know the folks down south in Wisconsin are happy with the weather today. Not only did they have record cold this year, they also had all the record snow to contend with too. That can take such a major toll in many ways on the towns and the cities.

We still have more winter to come up here in the North Woods of Wisconsin. And right now, what a perfect time to come and play in the snow!

This and thats

Today I thought before I started posting on the news, I would just write about other going ons.

The weather is still cold up here in the great north woods of Wisconsin. This morning we woke up to 17 below zero. I no longer remember how many nights in a row we have been below zero. And how many of those nights with the wind chill dropping to 35-40 below zero. I do love winter, but this cold blows big time!

We have been getting some lake affect snow, our snow total is finally going up. It is now darn near perfect for all outdoor winter sports. I have no complaints there!

More good news, we are now just starting to see more folks coming up here to enjoy all the winter sports. We have so much going on this time of the year. We have a few big ice fishing tournamentscoming up, and those are always so much fun. The ice is perfect right now too.  I noticed last weekend a big jump on the amount of folks out on the trails. I seen alot of trailers parked at local hotels. That is more then good news, that is great news!

Talking with local business owners on Monday, they said it was a busy weekend. And hope it keeps up now till the end of winter. Alot of families where up too, something we have not seen in awhile.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was thinking of starting something new. Giving a “shout out” to our local businesses. We have so many great folks up here that offer so much. We still have many ” mom and pop” stores too. I think it would be fun.
One other thing on my mind today, or for the last few days. Yeah, those little thoughts that pop in and out.
I hope I finally found the Theme that I like for my blog. I have been changing it for the last week or so. I dislike doing that, but I want one that I like. Gets me more in the mood to write. And boy, I could always us help on that.
I really love to write, and now that I have just started to blog, I am finding it to be so much fun. I do have tons still I need to improve on. To become a good writer you have to start some place. Yes, I have been writing since I can remember, in my own notebooks. There is a big difference to go from a notebook to being good, and writing what people want to read. I am by no means one of those people who was born a good writer. OH, far, far, from it. I have learned to do many things in my life. I know if I work at it, do it often, I can do it.  As for now, still learning and loving every second of it.
Up North
The word for today COLD. As I write this it is a little after one in the afternoon, with a temp. of 5 below zero! But hey, at least the sun is out. As if that makes a big difference with wind chills around 50 below zero.
The schools up here where canceled last night, and most folks like my dear hubby who work outside in this cold are home. Well, OK, not home, but out snowmobiling. Yeah, I know, snowmobiling, but the sun is out.
The cool part of being so cold is all the cool things you can do. Like blowing bubbles outside and watching them freeze. Much “funner” then taking boiling water and throwing that up in the air!
The trails are in awesome condition, as are all winter sports. We have a perfect base of snow now. Still, corners are icy and big time caution needs to be taken.
Our small town is getting ready for the big Derby this weekend. We will have thousands of snowmobiles up this coming weekend. And yes, I will be one of them, we are going out with a big group of great folks on Saturday. If we have no brake downs it should be a blast.
Odds And Ends
While down south is getting more snow today, we have sun, clear skies, and no snow in the near forecast.  We do have some hope next week with a major cold front, the right winds, and hopefully getting some lake affect snow.
http://www.weather.gov/view/states.php?state=wi&map=on
A PROLONGED PERIOD OF BITTERLY COLD AIR IS EXPECTED TO OVERSPREAD
THE REGION TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY OF NEXT WEEK. THIS FRIGID
AIRMASS MAY PRODUCE DANGEROUSLY COLD WIND CHILLS IN THE 25 BELOW
TO 35 BELOW ZERO RANGE. THE COLD NORTHWEST WINDS MOVING OVER THE
WARMER WATERS OF LAKE SUPERIOR MAY ALSO PRODUCE A LENGTHY PERIOD
OF LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL WISCONSIN.
I am not looking forward to the horrid cold temps. but the snow will be a major blessing!
Eagle River Snow Cams
http://www.snowconditions.com/snowcams.php
Looking for more websites and information to our area, to our small town living, I found this site that offers live web-cams. I will be posting information to other small towns in our area soon. And hopefully will find more good working web-cams to show the beauty of North Woods living.
Northwoods This Week
With most of the big snows staying down south again this winter, we did luck out with a few nice inches of fresh snow this week. The fresh snow is just in time, as starting Friday in Eagle River we have our 46thannual World Championship Snowmobile Derby. We will then have a three-day vintage racing. With the  World Championship Snowmobile Derby Jan. 15-18.
This Friday we start  racing under the lights, the best night time racing on snowmobiles. They put on a great firework show, also have snow cross and motorcycles that race on the ice. It is a blast! The crew at the Derby do an awesome job getting everything ready for this big event in the north woods.
The Derby is a major boost to our economy in the winter and for the year. We have folks coming from as far away as New York, Maine, Vermont, Oregon and Washington! It is a great time to visit the north woods. We have so much to offer folks in the north woods, it is truly a winter wonderland. You can down hill ski, cross county ski, ice fishing is great this time of year, and snow shoeing too. If outdoors in the winter is not your cup of tea, we have many local stores offering many unique items that you will not find any place else. All so we have many Casinos in the area, and they do a great job at offering great shows, and good food.
The snowmobile trails should be in good condition with the new snow, and our groomers will be working extra hard to keep them safe and for great riding.
The ice condition are perfect! People that I have spoke with are having no problems getting on to the ice. I was out on Friday on our “fishing hole,” and all slush was gone. Fishing is still good at night for walleye, and now the pan fish are starting to bite good. Check out one of our many bait stores for the fishing report and what bait is working the best. We still have our new bait laws in effect. Please help us stop the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS).
I made a big mistake! There is racing under the lights tonight, but not the “big” Friday Night Thunder Show. I misunderstood the racing schedule.
This weekend at the Derby track, starts out with the vintage racing, that I got right. Next weekend will be the start of the Championship racing, with the famous Friday Night Thunder.
I am very upset I made this mistake. I just started this kind of blogging, and I needed to make sure of the facts that I wrote.  I take this at a lesson learned.
Blog While Being Sick
Here in Wisconsin there has been a flu going around and a bad cold. People like my father in law, got both, first the flu, then the cold. The last few days it started going around my little house. My dear husband and I went out snowmobiling Friday night. Early Saturday morning he was up in the bathroom, my turn was yesterday afternoon. The trails are not that good anyway, so not missing much winter sports right now. I guess, you can call that the plus side of being sick?
We again missed out on the winter weather this weekend. It was cold below freezing yet we had freezing rain and drizzle last night. We need a nice freshsnow fall badly. On Friday when we went out, the trails are very bumpy in spots, with icy corners, and spots of snow/dirt. The trials are ride-able farther north, the better the trails are going to be. Also, the trails with the less traffic the better too. You can still have an enjoyable ride in Eagle River, it might be a bit more bumpy, but if you can go slow the trip will be well worth it.
Our groomers are doing a great job keeping the trails as ride-able as they can. Give them a wave if you see them on the trails with a thank you!
As I have been asking all winter,
Vacation Time Is Over
With my Christmas season done for this year, I can now get back to posting.
I took this season off from my computer because my dear husband had his Christmas vacation. With being just my husband and I with no children, we take this time to be together, be with our families and friends.
I am the computer geek in the house. My dear husband can turn on my laptop and play a few games, and that is about it. When I go on the computer, I can be on it for hours and not even notice. And if I get into researching something, forget it, nothing much can take me away.
We did have a wonderful Christmas. A few where sick in the family with that cold/flu going around up here. Christmas day was nice, peaceful, darn near perfect!
The weather on the other hand was bad for us in the north woods for a few day. We warmed up into the upper 40s and had rain, and mist for two days in a row. Taking with it a lot of our snow that was just starting to add up. The lakes became slush, all the trails where very sloppy. Now, still without snow to help, at least the weather is cooling down. The slush on the lakes should start to freeze, and now at least the snowmobile trails will have a good base. The trails are very icy right now, I will take icy over bare.
I have been going through news with-drawls the last few days. Yes, I know, I am strange! With only the MSM on the T.V. and not being able to check out my news websites, blogs, and the like, it was so hard!
My first stop on the computer this early evening was to my blog, now I am off to my websites.
